PIERRE CHABAL, NEW DIRECTOR OF THE LEXFEIM RESEARCH CENTRE

The Research Centre for Studies in Fundamental Rights, International Trade and the Sea (LexFEIM) elected Pierre CHABAL as its new director on June 28, 2022, taking office on September 1. The administrative responsibility for the laboratory has been exercised since 2013 by Mrs. Nathalie Zémiac, succeeding Mrs. Delphine Levée.

The LexFEIM brings together researchers in public law, private law, law history and political science focusing on 1) Fundamental rights, bioethics, biodiversity, 2) International issues and security, 3) law of economic activities and law of the maritime spaces. Founded by Dean P. Gélard in the 1990s under the name GREDFIC - Research Group in Fundamental, International and Comparative Law -, it was directed by Dean G. Lebreton in the 2000s ; then, became LexFEIM, directed by B. Bourdelois in the 2010s, and by Dean M. Bruno from 2018 to 2022.

Pierre Chabal, until recently deputy director of LexFEIM, joined the University of Le Havre Normandie in 2001 after a doctorate in political science (IEP de Grenoble) and three years at the European University Institute (Italy). His pre-doctoral career includes stays in Turkey, Belgium and England, the diploma of the IEP of Grenoble (Public Service section), a DEA in political science (IEPG), a DEA in European and International Studies (Faculty of Law, Grenoble), and the Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English.

Since his arrival in Le Havre, P. Chabal has created university collaborations with Asia, notably within GREDFIC then LexFEIM, with the national universities of Mongolia, a country which awarded him the Altan Gadas, the highest State civil distinction ; Kazakhstan, where he co-founded the Center for European Law at Al-Farabi University ; and Uzbekistan, as visiting professor at the University of World Economy and Diplomacy ; and universities in Turkey, Kyrgyzstan, Poland and India. This made it possible to involve several colleagues from UHN (Cirtai/Idées) and NU (Demolombe, Curej) in the 14 Europe-Asia conferences (more information here).

Among his main recent works : The Shanghai Cooperation : conceptualizing ‘the new Asia’ (HDR dossier defended at the IEP of Paris, published in 2019, Liège UP). And, in collaboration with Korean, Kazakh, Romanian and Kyrgyz colleagues : Eurasian challenges to international economic law (2022), Evolving regional values and mobilities in global contexts (2020), and Cross-border exchanges : Eurasian perspectives on logistics and diplomacy ( 2018). P. Chabal directs the "New International Insights" book-series of Peter Lang editions. He was an appointed member of the CNU.

At the head of LexFEIM, P. Chabal proposes to his colleagues to resolutely pursue the internationalization of social science research and its influence.
